About the Victory medal:
The World War II Victory Medal was officially established by an Act of Congress on July 6, 1945 (Public Law 135, 79th Congress) and announced in Section V of War Department Bulletin 12, 1945. The medal was designed by Thomas H. Jones and received formal approval from the Secretary of War on February 5, 1946.
From Victory Ribbon to Full Medal
Initially, the award was issued as a service ribbon, commonly referred to as the Victory Ribbon. It wasn’t until after the conclusion of World War II that the ribbon was replaced with a full bronze medal, symbolizing the official recognition of military service during the war.
Who Was Eligible?
According to the Congressional mandate, the medal was awarded to all members of the United States Armed Forces, including personnel from the Government of the Philippine Islands, who served on active duty or as reservists between December 7, 1941, and the official end of hostilities as declared by the President.
