About the Air Medal:

The Air Medal (AM) is a United States Armed Forces military decoration. Established in 1942, it is awarded for individual acts of heroism or notable achievement during aerial flight.

Criteria:

The Air Medal was created by Executive Order 9158, signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 11, 1942. It applies retroactively from September 8, 1939, to anyone who distinguishes themselves through meritorious achievement while serving in aerial flight with the Armed Forces.

The initial award criteria, outlined in an Army Policy Letter dated September 25, 1942, specified one Air Medal award for

  • Each naval vessel or three enemy aircraft confirmed destroyed in flight. The entire aircrew would be credited for sinking a ship, but only the pilot or gunner responsible would receive credit for destroying an enemy aircraft.
  • Every 25 operational flights where exposure to enemy fire is anticipated.
  • very 100 operational flights where exposure to enemy fire is not anticipated.
