About the Tag der Arbeit:

On May 1st, 1933, the Nazi regime rebranded the traditional International Workers’ Day as the National Day of Labor (officially: Holiday of National Labor, also referred to as German Labor Day). This marked a significant shift in the meaning of May Day in Germany. From 1934 onward, May Day celebrations were institutionalized as a national holiday for the German people, serving the regime’s propaganda goals.

In an effort to co-opt the working class, the NSDAP (Nazi Party) redefined the day—once a symbol of international labor solidarity—into a state-sanctioned celebration of national labor. The declaration of May 1st as a public holiday was part of a broader strategy to dismantle independent labor movements.

This transformation was accompanied by a brutal crackdown on free trade unions. On May 2nd, 1933, just one day after the official celebrations, Nazi paramilitary groups including the NSBO, SA, and SS forcibly occupied union offices across Germany. This marked the beginning of the systematic elimination of independent labor organizations, consolidating all worker representation under Nazi control.
