About the Luftwaffe:
The German Air Force (German: Luftwaffe, literally “air weapon” or “air arm”) is the aerial warfare branch of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s modern armed forces. The current Luftwaffe was founded in 1956 during the Cold War as the air force of West Germany. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, it integrated elements of the former East German Air Force (part of the National People’s Army, also founded in 1956).
It is important to note that the modern Luftwaffe has no organizational continuity with the Luftwaffe of the Wehrmacht, which was established in 1935 and disbanded in 1945–46 after World War II. The term “Luftwaffe” is the German-language term for any air force, used historically and today to describe Germany’s aerial military branch.
