About the cross:
The War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz, or KVK) was a decoration of the German Reich during World War II, awarded to both soldiers and civilians. It was established by decree on October 18, 1939, in the name of Adolf Hitler as Head of State.
The KVK was the highest wartime award for civilians who were not directly involved in combat. It was also given to military personnel engaged in non-combat duties—such as members of the medical corps, medical officers, veterinarians, and others involved in logistical or support roles. In this context, the KVK was often colloquially referred to as a typical “rear echelon medal” (Etappenorden), awarded without exposure to life-threatening situations, and recipients were sometimes mockingly called “rear echelon heroes” (Etappenhelden) or “rear stallions” (Etappenhengste).
