About the Frontkämpfer medal:

Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, President of the Weimar Republic, introduced the Honour Cross of the World War 1914/1918 on 13 July 1934. Collectors often refer to it as the Hindenburg Cross or German WWI Service Cross.

This medal recognized German veterans who served in World War I. Families of fallen soldiers also received it as a posthumous honor. The award marked Germany’s first official WWI service decoration.

Soon after its release, Nazi authorities declared it the only authorized WWI service medal. They banned most Freikorps awards from use on military and paramilitary uniforms.

The cross features a black pattée design with a silver border, inspired by the Teutonic Order. It symbolizes military service, national pride, and a key chapter in German military history.
