About the Campaign Medal:
The Kingdom of Italy introduced the Medaglia commemorativa della campagna italo-tedesca in Africa settentrionale—known in Germany as the Italian-German Campaign Medal—during World War II. Benito Mussolini established the medal in 1942 for soldiers who fought in the North African Campaign, creating two versions.
On January 8, 1943, Giovanni Magli, commander of the VII Army Corps in Corsica, signed the official decree. Engraver Roberto De Marchis designed the medal and placed his name under the crocodile on original pieces.
Italy awarded this decoration to both Italian and German soldiers who participated in the campaign. After Italy declared war on Germany on October 13, 1943, the German High Command revoked the right to wear Italian royal awards through a decree issued on March 29, 1944.
