About the war merit cross:
The German Reich introduced the War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz, or KVK) on October 18, 1939. Adolf Hitler authorized it as a decoration for both civilians and soldiers.
This award recognized non-combat contributions during WWII. Civilians received it for exceptional service, while military personnel earned it for support roles such as medical care, logistics, and veterinary work. People often called it the “rear echelon medal” (Etappenorden), and jokingly referred to recipients as “rear echelon heroes” or “rear stallions.”
The KVK reflects how Nazi Germany honored behind-the-scenes efforts during wartime.
