About the Kriegmarine:
The Kriegsmarine served as the naval branch of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945. It replaced both the Imperial German Navy (1871–1918) and the Reichsmarine (1919–1935) of the Weimar Republic. The Kriegsmarine was one of the three main branches of the Wehrmacht, alongside the Heer (Army) and the Luftwaffe (Air Force).
Growth and Rearmament
During the 1930s, the Kriegsmarine expanded rapidly as Germany rebuilt its military in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty had severely limited the size of the German navy and prohibited the construction of submarines.
Despite these restrictions, Germany began an intensive naval rearmament program, strengthening its fleet and preparing for future conflict.
Role in the Spanish Civil War
Kriegsmarine ships operated in waters around Spain during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Officially, they enforced non‑intervention agreements. However, in practice, they supported Nationalist forces against the Spanish Republic.
Importance in World War II
At the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Kriegsmarine remained smaller than other major navies. However, it played a crucial role in German strategy, especially through its U‑boat (submarine) fleet, which targeted Allied shipping routes.
The Kriegsmarine also deployed surface ships such as battleships and cruisers to disrupt enemy supply lines, although Allied naval strength limited their effectiveness over time.
