About Marinebrigade Ehrhardt:
The Marinebrigade Ehrhardt (Ehrhardt Brigade) was one of the most prominent Freikorps units in post-World War I Germany. Formed on 17 February 1919 as the 2nd Marine Brigade, it consisted largely of former members of the Imperial German Navy and was commanded by Korvettenkapitän Hermann Ehrhardt.
During 1919, the brigade took part in several major conflicts of the early Weimar Republic. It played a role in suppressing the Bavarian Soviet Republic and participated in operations during the First Silesian Uprising. These actions made the unit one of the most active Freikorps formations of the period.
The brigade became widely known in March 1920 for its involvement in the Kapp Putsch, an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the democratic government of the Weimar Republic. Faced with government orders to disband, the brigade supported the coup and marched into Berlin alongside other anti-government forces. Following the failure of the putsch, the Marinebrigade Ehrhardt was officially dissolved in May 1920.
Many former members later joined the clandestine Organisation Consul, which remained under Hermann Ehrhardt’s leadership. The group became notorious for its political violence and involvement in several high-profile assassinations during the early years of the Weimar Republic.
Today, the Marinebrigade Ehrhardt remains a significant subject in the study of Freikorps history, Weimar Germany, and the political turmoil that followed the First World War.
