About the Soldbuch:
The Soldbuch was one of the most important personal documents carried by a German soldier during military service. It served as an identification document, a pay record, and an equipment log all in one. In addition, the Soldbuch functioned as proof of military status and fulfilled the requirements for a combatant identification document under international wartime regulations.
Military authorities used the Soldbuch to record a wide range of information throughout a soldier’s service. As a result, it became an essential administrative record that accompanied the soldier during active duty. Unlike a passport, however, the Soldbuch did not authorize international travel.
A typical Soldbuch contained several important sections. The first pages recorded the soldier’s personal information and military details. Additional pages documented salary payments, allowances, and financial entitlements. Furthermore, military personnel recorded issued clothing, equipment, and other supplies. Medical facilities also used the document when admitting wounded soldiers to a hospital or field infirmary, allowing staff to record items such as weapons, uniforms, and personal effects.
One of the most distinctive features of early Soldbücher was the inclusion of payment coupons attached inside the rear cover. Clerks removed these coupons after issuing a soldier’s pay. Consequently, these sections often provide valuable insight into military administration and personnel records.
Military units generally acquired Soldbücher directly through their own regiments rather than through centralized procurement offices. Therefore, surviving examples vary considerably in appearance. Differences in printing methods, typefaces, paper quality, and manufacturing techniques often reflect the resources available to the issuing unit.
