About Heinrich Hoffmann
Heinrich Hoffmann (1885-1957) was a German photographer, publisher, and one of the most influential propaganda figures of the Third Reich. As Adolf Hitler’s official photographer, Hoffmann created many of the images that shaped Hitler’s public image throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
Hoffmann worked closely with Hitler and belonged to his inner circle. He published photographs, books, postcards, and promotional materials that helped spread Nazi propaganda across Germany. His photographs appeared in newspapers, magazines, posters, and official publications.
Because Hoffmann controlled many of the rights to Hitler’s image, he earned substantial royalties from their use. These earnings made him one of the wealthiest individuals connected to the Nazi regime.
After World War II, Allied authorities arrested Hoffmann and charged him with profiteering during the Nazi era. A court initially sentenced him to ten years in prison. An appeal later reduced the sentence to four years, and authorities released him in 1950.
Investigators also linked Hoffmann to the acquisition and trade of artworks that Nazi authorities had confiscated from Jewish collectors. As a result, the Allies classified him as a major offender in Nazi art plundering. They confiscated much of his art collection after the war.
Today, collectors and historians value original Photo-Hoffmann postcards and photographs for their historical significance.
