About the DDAC
Following the Nazi Party’s rise to power in 1933, the government reorganized and consolidated Germany’s independent motoring associations as part of the process known as Gleichschaltung. These organizations were brought together under the Der Deutsche Automobil-Club (DDAC), which became the country’s primary civilian automobile association.
Although the DDAC continued to operate, it did so under the influence of the National Socialist Motor Corps (NSKK), the regime’s official motorized organization. As a result, motoring activities increasingly reflected the policies and objectives of the National Socialist government.
The DDAC promoted the idea that automobile ownership and motor travel should become accessible to a broader segment of German society. Publications and advertisements from the period emphasized the concept of “Motoring for the People” (Volkskraftfahrt), presenting motoring as an activity that served the wider population rather than only wealthy motorists.
A notable example of this approach appeared during the 1934 International Automobile Exhibition, which organizers promoted as a public event intended for all Germans. This message aligned with the regime’s efforts to present technological progress, mobility, and modern transportation as part of a broader national vision.
Today, DDAC badges, membership pins, documents, and automotive memorabilia remain popular among collectors of German automobilia, motoring history, and Third Reich-era historical artifacts. These items provide valuable insight into the development of German automobile culture during the 1930s and the role that motoring organizations played in that period.
