About the RAD:
The Reich Labour Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst, or RAD) was a state-controlled labor organization in Nazi Germany. The regime used it to reduce unemployment, instill discipline, and promote its political ideology. The RAD served as the official national labor service and maintained separate divisions for men and women.
Beginning in June 1935, young men between the ages of 18 and 25 had to complete six months of labor service before entering military service. Members worked on a variety of public projects, including road construction, land improvement, agricultural work, and infrastructure development. These activities supported government employment programs while also preparing participants for military life.
The organization placed a strong emphasis on uniformity, discipline, physical fitness, and obedience. RAD members wore distinctive uniforms and insignia that identified their rank and unit. Through daily routines and organized activities, the RAD became an important tool for shaping the attitudes of young Germans during the period.
As the Second World War progressed, the responsibilities of the RAD expanded. Members contributed to wartime construction projects, defensive works, transportation networks, and logistical support. The organization worked alongside military authorities and played an important role in maintaining essential services and labor resources.
The RAD also introduced a compulsory labor service program for young women. Female members primarily worked in agriculture, healthcare support, household services, and other occupations considered important to the war effort. This program aimed to mobilize additional manpower and resources for the state.
