About the War Merit Cross:

Adolf Hitler introduced the War Merit Cross (KVK) on October 18, 1939. He created the award to recognize important contributions to the war effort.

The German military awarded the WW2 War Merit Cross to personnel in support roles. These roles included logistics, medical services, and administration. Authorities also gave the medal to civilians who supported production and organization.

People often viewed the award as a “rear echelon medal” (Etappenorden). It usually went to individuals outside the front lines. Some gave it informal nicknames that reflected this role.
