About the Sudeten Annexation:

The Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia (1938–1945) began with the German annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938 and escalated into full control over the country by the end of World War II. Following this initial expansion, Nazi Germany established the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, effectively dismantling Czechoslovakia’s sovereignty and extending its military occupation across the region.

After the Anschluss of Austria in March 1938 and the signing of the Munich Agreement in September 1938, Adolf Hitler moved swiftly to annex the Sudetenland on 1 October 1938. This strategic region included extensive Czechoslovak border fortifications, leaving the remaining state militarily vulnerable and exposed along its northwestern frontier.

The loss of the Sudetenland severely weakened what remained of Czechoslovakia (often referred to by Nazi Germany as “Rest-Tschechei”). At the same time, neighboring countries also seized territory. Poland annexed the Trans-Olza region, a long-disputed borderland with a Polish majority population, while the First Vienna Award granted Hungary control over southern Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia, areas largely inhabited by ethnic Hungarians.

Together, these territorial losses and political pressures paved the way for the complete German occupation of Czechoslovakia, marking a critical step in the expansion of Nazi influence in Central Europe prior to World War II.
