About the Postcard:

This postcard is a historical birthday card from Berlin in 1937, created during the city’s 700th anniversary celebrations. The Nazi regime organized these events as part of a large-scale propaganda campaign.

The main celebration took place from August 14 to August 22, 1937. Joseph Goebbels, Reich Minister of Propaganda, led the event. After this, the regime continued with more propaganda festivals and public events across Berlin.

At the same time, the Nazis began planning to turn Berlin into the “World Capital Germania” (Welthauptstadt Germania). Adolf Hitler and architect Albert Speer designed massive building projects. These plans included wide boulevards and monumental structures. Most of them were never built. However, you can still see some traces of these ideas in Berlin today.

The New Reich Chancellery (Neue Reichskanzlei) was the only major building from this plan that was fully completed. Construction started in mid-1937. Workers officially opened the building on January 7, 1939, and finished it in 1943.

This postcard reflects an important moment in Berlin’s history under Nazi rule, when propaganda, architecture, and politics shaped the city.
