Historical Context and Background

The regime created the Reich Labour Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst, RAD) to combat unemployment and militarize workers. Additionally, the leadership used the organization to spread party propaganda.

Starting in June 1935, young men served six months in the RAD before entering military duty. Later, the state expanded compulsory service to young women as well. During World War II, RAD units actively supported Wehrmacht logistical operations. Eventually, the leadership instituted the RAD 4 Year Service Medal to reward long-term service.

Members of the labor service performed essential civil infrastructure work throughout Germany. For instance, workers built major roadways, reclaimed agricultural farmland, and drained marshlands. When the wartime conflict intensified, these units transitioned toward active military engineering. Consequently, members constructed defensive fortifications, dug anti-tank trenches, and repaired frontline airfields. Therefore, decorations like this 4-year service award symbolized four years of dedicated labor within this structured national service.

Collector Value and Preservation

This particular award stands out because it retains its original protective tissue paper. Often, previous owners discarded the delicate wrapping paper over time. However, this complete set preserves the full presentation as issued during the period. Furthermore, the bronze finish shows minimal surface wear, maintaining crisp details on both sides.
