About the Eastern front medal:
The Eastern Front Medal (German: Ostmedaille) carried the official name Winter Battle in the East 1941–42 Medal (Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42). Adolf Hitler established this German military decoration on 26 May 1942.
The Wehrmacht awarded the medal to its soldiers and to members of the Waffen-SS who fought in the Eastern Front winter campaign between 15 November 1941 and 15 April 1942. Families also received the medal on behalf of soldiers who died in the Soviet Union.
German soldiers quickly gave the award an ironic nickname: the Frozen Meat Medal, or Order of the Frozen Flesh (Gefrierfleischorden). Collectors today prize the Eastern Front Medal as a key World War II decoration.
