About the FAD:
The Freiwilliger Arbeitsdienst (FAD), or Voluntary Labor Service, was a publicly funded employment program introduced in 1931 by the Reich Agency for Employment and Unemployment Insurance during the Weimar Republic. The program aimed to bring together young unemployed individuals in labor camps, where they could engage in temporary work that benefited the public while providing participants with a sense of purpose and social contribution.
On 16 July 1932, Friedrich Syrup, the Secret Government Councillor and President of the Reich Agency for Employment and Unemployment Insurance, was appointed Reich Commissioner for the Voluntary Labor Service, overseeing the organization and administration of the program.
The FAD represented an early effort in Germany to combat youth unemployment, promote social cohesion, and prepare participants for productive roles in society.
