About the Reichssportwettkämpfe:

In the early years of the Third Reich, sports played a subversive role as a form of military preparation, due to restrictions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. As a result, sporting events were highly valued by the NSDAP, and awards were issued at both national and local levels to victorious athletes. Even after military conscription was reintroduced, youth sporting events remained important as pre-military training and physical conditioning exercises.

From late 1934, Hitler Youth Sports Festivals were organized across Germany. Initially called “Sport-” or “Jugendfest,” these events were renamed “Reichsportwettkampf” (National Sport Competition) after 1937. Hitler Youth members who achieved above-average scores in three sports contests were awarded badges along with “Ehrenurkunden” (honor certificates).

The badge itself is made of solid cast aluminum, shaped as a vertical oval. It features the Hitler Youth diamond with a mobile swastika at the center, surmounted by an eagle, flanked by oak leaf sprays, and embossed with the year “1936.”
