About the Iron Cross:

The Iron Cross (German: Eisernes Kreuz, abbreviated EK) was a military award in the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire (1871–1918), and Nazi Germany (1933–1945). Its design, a black cross pattée with a white or silver border, originated from the emblem of the medieval Teutonic Order, worn by its knights since the 13th century. Beyond being a military decoration, it served as a symbol for the Prussian Army, the Imperial German Army, and the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic, while the Wehrmacht used a variant called the Balkenkreuz (bar cross). Today, the Iron Cross serves as the emblem of the Bundeswehr, the current German armed forces.
