About the BDM:

The League of German Girls (German: Bund Deutscher Mädel, or BDM) was the female branch of the Hitler Youth. It was the official youth organization of the Nazi Party and the only legal youth group for girls in Nazi Germany.

The BDM was divided into two main sections by age. The Jungmädelbund (“Young Girls’ League”) included girls aged 10 to 14. The main BDM group was for those aged 14 to 18.

In 1938, a third section appeared. This was the BDM-Werk Glaube und Schönheit (“Faith and Beauty Society”). It was voluntary and open to young women aged 17 to 21.

Membership was officially compulsory for all eligible girls. Exceptions applied to those excluded for racial reasons. By the late 1930s, the BDM had over 4.5 million members, making it the largest female youth organization of its time.
