About the cross:
The War Merit Cross (KVK) was a decoration of the German Reich during World War II, awarded to both soldiers and civilians. Adolf Hitler established it by decree on October 18, 1939, in his role as Head of State.
This award recognized civilians who contributed to the war effort without engaging in combat. Military personnel also received it for non-combat roles, including medical staff, veterinarians, and logistics workers.
Many referred to the KVK as a typical “rear echelon medal” (Etappenorden), since recipients often avoided direct danger. Some mockingly called them “rear echelon heroes” (Etappenhelden) or “rear stallions” (Etappenhengste), highlighting the non-combat nature of their service.
